Why Visit

Why Marrakech Should Be Your Next Trip

Marrakech is a sensory explosion -- Jemaa el-Fnaa square erupts with snake charmers, storytellers, henna artists, and food stalls each evening, while the souks of the Medina overflow with spices, leather goods, carpets, and lanterns. The Bahia Palace's intricate stucco work, the Majorelle Garden's vibrant cobalt blue owned by Yves Saint Laurent, and traditional riad guesthouses in the old city offer a more refined side of Morocco's most visited city. The snow-capped Atlas Mountains provide a stunning backdrop.

Seasons

Budget Tips for Marrakech

Marrakech is very affordable -- a tagine at a local restaurant near Jemaa el-Fnaa costs 30-50 MAD (-5). Haggle firmly in the souks -- the first price quoted is typically 3-4x the fair price. Stay in a riad in the Medina for authentic accommodation at budget prices from 200-400 MAD. The Koutoubia Mosque gardens are free to admire from outside. The Majorelle Garden costs 150 MAD and is worth every dirham. Jemaa el-Fnaa food stalls offer cheap eats but agree on price first. Drink only bottled water.

Getting Around

How to Get Around Marrakech

Marrakech is a walkable city in the Medina area but it is a maze of narrow alleys that can be disorienting -- use landmarks like the Koutoubia minaret for orientation. Petits taxis (small beige cabs) are metered and the best option for getting between the Medina, Gueliz (new city), and the airport. Fares start at 7 MAD and a trip across the city costs about 20-40 MAD. The local bus network is cheap at 4 MAD but routes can be confusing. Horse-drawn carriages (calèches) are available for tourist rides but agree on the price beforehand. Gueliz has wide boulevards walking-friendly. The city is very walkable within the Medina itself but the heat makes this challenging in summer. Most riads are in pedestrian-only zones requiring a short walk from the nearest taxi drop-off point.

Hivernage is the upscale district near the Majorelle Garden with boutique hotels from $120-200 USD. Budget hostels in the Medina from $5-15 USD.
